Testimonials

“Her skills are so much better – it’s almost an unfair advantage for her to show up at college compared to students that haven’t had this training.” Parent of current college Freshman
“A homework helper wasn’t going to help. He could grasp the concepts. But he couldn’t organize himself and get started. It’s the difference between ‘I need Algebra help’ vs. ‘I need help to break this project into sections and know what to do first.'” Parent of 11th grader
“The more anxious I get, the harder I am on him, which doesn’t help out relationship. Working with someone who isn’t the parent reduced the stress for him and for us. To have someone he doesn’t want to disappoint is worth all the tea in China.” Parent of 10th grader
“ He is learning how to fish vs. being handed the fish. There is a skills transfer in learning how to plan, to organize, ect. And with the homework center, they can actually implement the plan they make in their one-on-one coaching.” Parent of 7th grader
“At first I didn’t want to go and thought it was a waste of time. But over time, she helped me forcus more on my work and be more effiencient. I learned processes to do my work more quickly and efficiently. It was great just to have someone rooting for me.” Former student, now in college

The StudyPro

The StudyPro is an Executive Function and Study Skills Center. We are the only learning center dedicated to improving the study skills and habits of students. Our Essential Study Skills course teaches critical skills — such as time management, organization, note-taking, and test prep — that are required, but not fully taught in schools. Our Homework Center is a place where students come to plan and complete work, and is supported by subject-matter experts across all subject areas. Our 1:1 coaching helps to support students on a weekly basis with organizing work, breaking down (“chunking”) longer-term assignments, assessing what may have gone wrong on tests, providing strategies for managing time and materials and creating a weekly work “plan”. We work with students on organizing and studying for all tests and have special workshops to support mid-terms and finals. We also hold a highly-attended (free) “Lunch and Learn” series for parents where local experts speak on topics such as fostering motivation and helping students push through frustration. If your son or daughter is smart, yet still struggles with some aspects of study or Executive Function skills, we have built this center for you. History Established in 2016. The StudyPro was founded in partnership by Kathy Essig, M.Ed. and Debbie Rosen. Based on Kathy’s extensive educational experience, and Debbie’s 30 years in business as well as her personal experience raising a son with ADHD, we wanted to build a new type of center to serve the unique needs of kids who need help with the “process” of school. Many kids “get” the content (aka math, English), but are challenged with starting, completing, organizing and/or staying on track. As a result, often there are struggles at home, putting strains on the relationships between parents and students. Tutors can be helpful, but when the challenge is “process”, students need to learn new skills, such as how to (really) use a planner, how to take proper notes from text or in class or how to build a study guide. This is where we help – we teach the core skills, provide a homework center to practice on real work and provide 1:1 coaching to personalize help and build independent, motivated learners.

Kathy Essig:As a Special Education Diagnostician and the creator of the Upper School Learning Center at the Potomac School in McLean, VA, Kathy has spent her career observing students with variable executive function skills. Kathy helps students to gain an understanding of their learning strengths and weaknesses, manage time and schedules, create visual and auditory note-taking strategies and effectively prepare for and take tests. The overarching goal is to develop a student who is self-aware, confident and has achieved 'learned independence'.Debbie Rosen:The StudyPro represents a "2nd calling" for Debbie who spent the last 30 years balancing her career in technology and raising her children. As a mother of a child with ADHD, she has worked tirelessly to navigate the challenges of raising a son who learns differently. After experiencing the struggles for students with "under-developed" executive functioning skills, her personal passion became a professional one.

It is expensive and we live far away (Howard Co) but I can't really find anything similar nearby.

Concussions impact NFL players' cognition years later, study shows

A new study says NFL players who suffered concussions perform worse in cognitive tests years after retiring. File Photo by Khaled Sayed/UPI

March 2 (UPI) -- A new study released Thursday found that former professional football players who recalled suffering concussions perform worse in cognitive tests years later than those who hadn't played the sport.

The study, published in the journal Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology , showed that the athletes posted scores worse than non-players on assessments of episodic memory, sustained attention, processing speed and vocabulary. Advertisement

Researchers at Mass General Brigham investigators from McLean Hospital and the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network led the study.

"It is well-established that in the hours and days after a concussion, people experience some cognitive impairment," Laura Germine, director of the Laboratory for Brain and Cognitive Health Technology at McLean Hospital, said in a statement. RELATED Ex-NFL star Irv Cross, who died in 2021, diagnosed with CTE

"However, when you look decades out, the data on the long-term impact has been mixed," said Germine, who also is an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

"These new findings from the largest study of its kind show that professional football players can still experience cognitive difficulties associated with head injuries decades after they have retired from the sport."

Researchers said that 353 retired NFL players completed hour-long neuropsychological tests through an online platform called TestMyBrain, which is supported by McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Advertisement

The tests were performed remotely on a laptop or desktop, and included assessments that measured processing speed, visual-spatial and working memory, and aspects of short- and long-term memory and vocabulary.

Concerns about professional football players and concussions have remained in the national headlines since pathologist Dr. Bennett Omalu published the first evidence of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy , or CTE, in 2005 in his diagnosis of former NFL star Mike Webster .

Such brain injuries also have been diagnosed in athletes from other sports like boxing and soccer and non-athletic occupations like the military. RELATED Researchers: 91.7% of 376 former NFL players in study had CTE

In the Mass General Brigham study, younger former players outperformed nonplayers on some tests, while older retired players were more likely to perform worse than controls on cognitive tasks.

Researchers noted that many head injuries or sub-concussive blows may not have been diagnosed at the time players were active as concussions due to a lack of awareness at the time or underreporting of symptoms by players.
